Great Lake Swimmers' Tony Dekker in-studio, 4-1-09

Recording engineer: Steven Kray

The Great Lake Swimmers create the kind of music that seems to grow directly from the band's Ontario roots. Like the landscape that surrounds them, the songs are at once beautiful and desolate, warm and stark, sometimes hopeful, occasionally bleak. Frontman Tony Dekker began the band a few years back as a more or less one man act, and it has grown from there-- resulting lately in the stunning 2007 effort Ongiara, and the recent Lost Channels, an album that finds the Great Lake Swimmers cohesing more than ever into a "full band sound." We talked to Dekker about that shift, as well as the interesting recording premise that informed the new album.
