Ah Holly Fam'ly in-studio, 10-2-09
Recording engineer: Steven Kray, with technical assistance from Randy Layton
Portland's Ah Holly Fam'ly plays songs from their beguiling Reservoir, the album released in October on the Lucky Madison label. The band's mixture of ethereal voices laid over complex multi-instrumentalism looks forward and back, at once evoking the ghosts of Appalachia and Aaron Copland even while it looks ahead to more state-of-the-art, experimental forms of folk. They talk about the early incarnations (and numerous name changes) of the group, the challenges of being a large band, and the inspirations behind their music, which has been described as Disney goes to Appalachia.
