A while back I was driving north on the 405 and happened across what appeared to be a video shoot of some kind underway off in the brush alongside the freeway. The subjects were dressed in black and white and there was at least one hooded robe involved. Clearly, I thought, YACHT must be making a video. They were coy about it afterward via Twitter, but I know what I saw.
Anyway, this has nothing much to do with that, except that any scenes captured that day along the 405 either didn't make the cut or are still in the works for something else (although the band mentions a scene that ended up on the cutting room floor in introducing the video on their website). This is, however, a new video from YACHT and director Mitchell Davis, the pairing of which is an interesting story in and of itself.
Davis first came to YACHT's attention after he had used their music to soundtrack some of his YouTube vlog creations, for which he had already become something of an internet sensation. Long story made short, YACHT was impressed-- enough so that they befriended the Ohio-based Davis (who was apparently a really big fan) and eventually asked him to direct a video. Oh, the times in which we live! In any case, this is the result: filmed largely in the Painted Hills near Mitchell, Oregon before retreating to a sparse white room, "I Walked Alone" keeps it simple, putting the focus on Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans and one of the best songs from this year's thoroughly enjoyable Shangri-La. It's also slightly less hi-fi than the first video from the record that came out this past spring.
But that's not all! The "I Walked Alone" single came out this week as well and features a handful of remixes, including this one from Larry Gus.
YACHT is currently touring the east coast playing Shangri-La in III Acts, many of the dates with fellow Portlanders Parenthetical Girls
