After a nice day off for Veteran’s Day (your employer did give you Veteran’s Day off, right?), Around the Horn is back with some mid-week headlines for you. Before we get too far into the nitty gritty, however, I wanted to mention again the upcoming audience in-studio we have lined up for tomorrow. We’re inviting folks down to OPB headquarters (7140 SW Macadam Avenue, Portland OR, 97219) for a special in-studio with Portland-based Point Juncture, WA. The first 25(ish) people to come through the doors at 1:45 will be seated for a 2pm taping to be aired later on in the month on opbmusic.org. It should be a rockin' good time and we’re hoping to ramp these up in the future so be on the look out for more audience in-studios coming up. Join us at OPB for an afternoon, see some great music firsthand and be a part of a radio performance! On to headlines…
With the election now over, one of the first items on Obama’s plate is to figure out which musical acts will be playing at his inauguration come January. Okay, so this probably isn't on his plate or even on the table, but music folks are speculating nonetheless. Who are you pulling for?
If you’re an R.E.M. fan, you’ll love this -- it’s an online version of Name that Tune specifically for R.E.M. songs.

The New York Times skips rocks in a tranquil night out with Joseph Arthur.
This one made me laugh. Spencer Elden, the baby who was made famous by being on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind album in 1991, is back in the pool at age 17 ... with trunks this time.

With the end of the year fast approaching, people are starting to compile best-of lists. Amazon.com has announced its year-end lists for music, movies and TV, while NPR has listed out 2008’s most overlooked albums.
Pitchfork meanwhile has released a new book entitled: The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present. Portlanders can find the book at Powell's, as well as online.
To cap things off today, Seattle's Fleet Foxes made the news this week by winning UK-based Uncut's album of the year award. The Uncut Music Award was given to the Fleet Foxes by a panel of music industry professionals. The band, which is currently touring in Europe this month, was also recently featured on La Blogotheque in a lovely Takeaway Show.
Questions? Comments? Feel free to shoot 'em over. And don't forget to join us tomorrow at the OPB studios for a special audience in-studio with Point Juncture, WA! It should prove to be a great one.

Not to say anything bad about the previous rendition, but this site looks a WHOLE LOT better than it did last week! Nice going!

the site looks great! (but the favicon is gone; i liked the little "O" in there.)

A fresh lick of paint eh? The profile section is a big improvement, and the ability to comment on different sessions/blogs is welcomed. Shame there's still no global (site-wide) song/band/subject search.
I see from your calender that opbmusic is sponsoring Freak Mountain Ramblers... oh dear. A popular but very ordinary and unoriginal local feel-good lowest common denominator band... Hopefully you can get away with playing them as little as possible during In-House (I know you wouldn't play them of your own volition).
Meanwhile, I'm impressed by my preview copy of the upcoming Robley release, are you? Surprisingly lively given his other manifestation as Norfolk and Western.

Hey, the first weekend entry is over here! Oh well.
As far as the site changes go, there may still be a few things in the works, so don't lose hope. Just wondering: what will the search function enable you to do (I mean, aside from searching)? Is it the sheer novelty of being able to do it...or something else?
We actually sponsor all of the McMenamin's Great Northwest Music Tour shows every month, which tend to vary in flavor from month to month. They've also featured Langhorne Slim, The Everybodyfields, and Fernando, among others.
Yeah, I was thinking I'd get to a cut from the new Robley disc tonight. I've liked what I've heard so far. Did he play with Norfolk & Western or am I missing something?

Robley appeared on some Norfolk & Western stuff, and his solo stuff has previously been influenced by Norfolk & Western's Adam Setzer (per my information).
The search function isn't a novelty - let's say someone hears a song by a band and wants to know if there are any others you've played, or if there's a review (of any song) by that band. Also, just entering 'cold' it's interesting to see what's generally played. The playlists are archived anyhow, a simple search function is already available in the Content management system OPBmusic is built off of.
OK now I'm going over here! (http://opbmusic.org/blog/entries/339-Around-the-Horn-Off-to-the-Weekend
