Music Blog
It's almost that time again-- the annual musical confluence of hippies, indies, cowboys, old-timers, porch stompers, hellbillies and more or less everything in between that is the Pickathon indie-roots music festival comes to Pendarvis Farm August 6th-8th boasting an impressive line-up of popular returnees (Dr. Dog, Langhorne Slim, Breathe Owl Breathe), first time intrigues (Bonnie Prince Billy, Heartless Bastards, Billy Joe Shaver, Fruit Bats, Cotton Jones) and local favorites (Richmond Fontaine, Weinland, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside). UPDATE: Billy Joe Shaver has apparently had to bow out of this year's lineup citing health issues. His replacement? Mr. Hayes Carll.
Three days of music, camping, food and chillaxing begin August 6th and run deep into the night of August 8th (the early wee hours of August 9th, if you want to get technical about it). We'll be there in force bringing you the sights and sounds of Pickathon weekend right here on the blog (no doubt including the peaceful co-existence of tattoos and cowboy hats), but we'd love nothing more than for you to experience it first hand!
We've got pairs of tickets up for grabs, all you have to do is send us an email (opbmusic@opb.org) or leave a comment below explaining why you should be the esteemed and chosen winner of said tickets! Don't think too hard (it's kind of a gut reaction anyway if you ask me)-- get us your response by next Wednesday, July 28th and we'll choose the entries we like best.
In the meantime, why not conjure up a little inspiration by perusing the full festival schedule and sampling some audio product below. Good luck!

Winning tix is the only way I'll get to see The Heartless Bastards. And I haven't missed them when they've been in town in years.

I'm going to say it because no one else has had the guts to. Please. Please donate Pickathon tickets to a simple boy from Idaho. Thank you.

I demand to be chosen for the following reasons: 1.) because I tied a sarong here... and here. 2.) I just have a thing for weird, obscure, and obnoxious insterments. 3.) if I mention a band and you have already heard of them... I loose. 4.) in essance indie music is all the same song... But with a different guitar riff. 5.) I knew about "hey there Delilah waaay befor you did. 6.) I belong to a "we love indie" discussion group. 7.) I own more pearl snap shirts then a buffalo exchange. 8.) my all time favorite movie is INDIana Jones... Ya get the drift? :-)

I would love to see T Model Ford play in the heat of the Oregon summer and jam to his blues rifs...the man is 88 years old. I am running out of time!

I want to bike to a festival with all my stuff in my tricycle basket. I want to be cheap and get a free ticket. If you give me this free ticket, it would save me the horror of doing the hippy dance and praying for a miracle to get it. P.S. I don't want to spin around for hours and hours in front of the entrance; please save me the time. I've done this; I hate it. P.P.S. i promise if you give me a ticket i will not do the hippie dance inside. P.P.P.S. I listen to opb because i want to hear something new instead of some played out station and will honor you by covering my tricycle with your stickers. Thank you for your time.

Hey OPB, I know everyone else wants those tickets just as much as I do. I could post some usual story about why I want them more than others, but the truth is I can't afford tickets, and would like to see the shows. :)

Esteemed Pickathon: To be honest with you, I don't think I can keep up the stamina for three days with what most likely will be hearty twenty-something's(beautiful people) musical happening. On the other-hand, I live in a very hip apartment building in NW Portland, and around the corner from my place is a very n-i-c-e couple who will be celebrating an anniversary of their co-habitating for 5 years, and I'd like to present them with the tickets as a tribute to their collaborative lifestyle. How is that for a run-on sentence? Ever faithful listener, Christine

I wanna go! Whaaaaaa!

Since I already have a weekend pass I shouldn't be the winner of yet another weekend pass, let alone two of them. Because what I would do with the two passes, if I were chosen the esteemed one is sell them at a deep discount to two needy and worthy friends of mine, take the profits give half to the local chapter of Girls School of Rock and take the other half to buy CDs from as many of the Pickathon performers as possible.

The sun, the fun, the mellow, the beer, the forest, the sounds, the thai food, the barn, the dirt...at least once a year we all need to stretch our soul with good music. May I? Phil

I need these tickets, I'm stuck in the armpit of texas, with a hurricane looming, about to be laid off from the space program and i need some good luck my way.

I want to go to the pick a thon but I don't want to pay for it. I am on disability and love what is going on at the farm. I have even played Sherry Pendarvis' stand up bass and know some of the folks involved. But I am not cool enough to get in for free. Attending this event could open up opportunities for me to be more involved and support the local music community. Jason I also live near the area where the farm is!

So many great entries and an impressively wide range of reasons given-- we got scores here and via email and would have picked 20 if we could have. Congrats to our winners, Erin W. and William K.! Enjoy your Pickathon!
