1- Hey, you know that newish album from Swedes The Shout Louds called Work? It's a real grower. Seriously, don't overlook it...and don't overlook the band themselves at the Doug Fir May 16th. Here's a taste...
► The Shout Out Louds- "Walls"
2- Speaking of Merge, the label just reissued Destroyer's (aka Dan Bejar) early trio of releases: City of Daughters, Thief and Streethawk: A Seduction, to which we say huzzah! This song is from none of those three, but you can take what you can get and Your Blues is still sort of vintage, just a bit less so (2004).
► Destroyer- "It's Gonna Take an Airplane"
3- Speaking of Dan Bejar, that supergroup he's part of is at it again. The New Pornographers return next week with their first release in three years-- album number five is Together and it's another stellar collection of classic-leaning pop from A.C. Newman, the aforementioned Bejar, Neko Case, Todd Fancey and company. Oh and they're at the Crystal Ballroom on July 16th. Here's a slice fueled by Neko's golden pipes.
► New Pornographers- "Crash Years" (free Amazon download)
4- Hey look, it's the B-side to the recent digital single from David Vandervelde! It's been a couple of years since his last full length, and the recent pair has done nothing to dissuade us from believing that his next is going to be a doozy. He just does that T. Rex/ F. Mac thing so well...
► David Vandervelde- "Wave Country"
5- This one's bouncing around in my head lately. Lawrence Arabia (there is no "of" included, thank you) is the one man band that is New Zealander James Milne. His debut release Chant Darling was released stateside in March and, is it just me or is this cut from the same musical progeny as countrymates Spilt Enz and next door neighbor Paul Kelly only updated for our modern times?
► Lawrence Arabia- "Apple Pie Bed"
To the weekend then!
