Your Saturday Night Open Thread...

The Portland band Weinland plays two tonight, a double-header of sorts at Mississippi Studios to celebrate the release of their new Breaks In the Sun. The official April 21st release date comes just over a year after the well received La Lamentor  and is a particularly quick turn around given the amount of time the band had spent on the road promoting that last album. Nevertheless, the new one finds them further hitting their stride, the quintet showing that they've grown as musicians and as a cohesive unit. Both efforts are available on the Portland-based Badman label-- watch for Weinland soon as part of an opbmusic in-studio session.

More to come here throughout the night-- what's on your minds??

Regarding the trailer for the upcoming Spike Jonze-directed Where the Wild Things Are I spoke of that uses the Arcade Fire's music to great effect, watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--N9klJXbjQ

Hi Gunky, I think it's a grower, the new Weinland album, but then I think that about a lot of albums these days so maybe it's just a phase I'm going through. I think it's actually more consistent than La Lamentor as a whole. They're our next featured in-studio session in the coming week, so you'll have even more chance to judge then. I've heard there are some sound issues at the new venue, and knowing them I'm sure they're working on it. As for the staging for last night's show, I saw a few photos and I thought it was actually really novel and interesting to have the have the band proper on the stage and all of the bells and whistles up above. Again, just going by the photos I saw. Thanks for the report!

I see that Laura Burhenn half of the now defunct "Georgie James" was on keyboards and b. voc for that OPB set. Her song "Cake Parade" is worth another airing, as would any Dresden Dolls (I actually think Cake Parade 'borrows' rather heavily from Dresden Dolls). New act to watch out for: Rachel Taylor Brown

Having the "bells and whistles" above didn't seem to be a problem but if you depended on chemistry between band members it may not work. Adam Shearer and others on the main stage had to periodically turn around and look up at the guests above and behind them, who were almost, literally, in the dark even when they were playing in a few songs. But that arrangement may have been the band's choice to try it - I imagine additional parts could be added to make the stage bigger if necessary.

Yeah, I was surprised to see her when O plus S came in because I had no idea that was the case. Too bad about Georgie James' break-up, a fine debut and, yes, "Cake Parade" was one of the better singles I heard all year. Love their Zombies and Flamin' Groovies covers for our live session with them, too. Just got the Brown release in the mail and am looking forward to hearing it based on her last album. Maybe something from it tomorrow night.

So, I'd love to hear something from the upcoming Super Furry Animals LP. If you don't have anything yet, I'd settle for "The Gift That Keeps Giving" from their last one. THANKS!

Jeremy Petersen / April 11, 2009
Sure, we can do that. I'll play the one we have so far, so the decision is easy. Happy Saturday night, Zed.

Hey! I was driving and I missed the name of the band that sang, "Angella say uh huh. Could you please send me information regarding that band? Thanks!

Jeremy Petersen / April 11, 2009
Hi John, It was actually two songs: "Say Aha" by Santigold going into "Angela" by Speck Mountain. Full rundown with album titles is here: http://opbmusic.org/playlists/2009/4/11/20 Thanks for listening!

Caught the Weinland show at MS Studios last night. The new CD sound pretty good, if maybe a bit spotty. Hard to tell from a live show what the studio will sound like, of course, and the band was uncharacteristically loose on stage last night (music was still tight, but clearly they were enjoying themselves in their suits and all...). They did try to "melt our faces" on a few songs and almost even succeeded. Several songs I quite liked, a few I need to hear a couple more times to really know. BTW, the revamped space at MS Studios didn't really thrill me. Kinda boxy now, with a very small stage, and some sound issues that hopefully are in the process of still being worked out. Weinland had some guest musicians that actually had to play from the balcony above the band - pretty odd.

Sure, it was Michachu & the Shapes-- "Calculator" is on the new album called Jewellery. More is here... http://www.myspace.com/micayomusic Glad you liked it!
